It is still hard to tell when we might get back to what we used to call normal. The vaccine rate is still slower than one could have hoped for and there is talk about how to deal with a third covid-19 wave. But on the other hand, it feels like we are slowly getting used to this new reality.
Climate change has had little focus during the pandemic and even if the signs that things are not right are many we tend to look at each of them as coincidences. The cherry blossoms in Japan have, apparently, never been this early and this much. The pandemic has learned us that we can accomplish great things if we work together. Let’s hope we can take this knowledge with us into the future.
The prices keep increasing. For example the LDPE film contract price. The first week of January it was 1,320 EUR/kg and last week it was 2,140 EUR/kg, i.e. +62%. We have never seen prices above 2,000 EUR/kg before and now we are well above. GPS hopes that the prices will stabilize at a level workable for both the industry and the polymer producers. Extreme increases like this introduces high risk into the market.
